After a 17-hour travel day – bus trip to Munich, flight to New York, bus ride to the hotel in the rush hour – all members of the Linz Bruckner Orchestra and the accompaniment have arrived well on the US east coast. And they met a good, old “acquaintance” in the hotel: As a surprise the former director Rainer Mennicken welcomed the musicians!

Rainer Mennicken has also come to New York for this special occasion to congratulate Philip Glass on his 80th birthday. Finally, the Bruckner Orchestra plays today, Tuesday, the premiere of the most recent Glass Symphony in the world-famous Carnegie Hall.

Yesterday, Monday, the musicians and musicians, however, according to the collective agreement, had a free day to overcome the jet lag and to acclimatise themselves. Not so for Martin Edtmayr. He had to be back at the airport at six o’clock in the morning. Three American inspectors attended to open 70 flight cases of the orchestra in the presence of Edtmayr. The control routine included a check if all the instruments fulfil the Biodiversity Protection Agreement. As reported, no instruments with ivory or similar can be imported into the USA. “Smaller” instruments such as violas, violins or flutes were not directly affected by this, and they traveled as hand luggage.
This afternoon, a rehearsal is scheduled from 2.30 pm, the concert starts at 7.30 pm. On Wednesday the Bruckner Orchester were moving on to Chapel Hill in North Carolina, on Thursday to Ann Arbor near Detroit and on Friday to Chicago.
