JOHANNES BRAHMS Piano Concerto No. 2 in B major
ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 7 in D minor
Elisabeth Leonskaja piano
Filharmonie Brno
conductor Dennis Russell Davies
Elisabeth Leonskaja has her devoted audience in Brno, whom she bewitched in autumn 2019 with her renderings of Bartók’s Third Piano Concerto and the complete Beethoven piano concertos. By presenting Antonín Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony, Dennis Russell Davies continues to pursue one of his objectives in Brno, namely the performance and recording of every symphony by this composer.
Brahms’s piano concertos are separated by two decades. While the First was a successful, though initially misunderstood, embodiment of the idea of a “symphonic concerto”, the Second definitely confirmed and developed this concept, this time meeting with the full understanding of the audience, which first heard the work on 9 November 1881 in Budapest.
Antonín Dvořák worked on his Seventh Symphony from December 1884 to March 1885 on invitation from the London Philharmonic Society. Having had diverse experiences with the symphonic form, Dvořák felt that its seemingly absolute nature provided composers with the most universal options for capturing their relationships with the world at particularly important moments of their lives. Now such a moment presented itself in Dvořák’s life, and he described his mainstays in a letter to a friend as love, God and my country.
